Magnetic Ink (MICR Ink)
Magnetic ink, also known as MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) ink, contains magnetizable particles (typically iron oxide) that can be magnetically read by specialized equipment. It is primarily used for printing characters that can be automatically processed – most commonly on bank checks.
How it works:
The ink contains ferromagnetic particles suspended in a vehicle. After printing, the characters are magnetized, and a MICR reader detects the unique waveform generated by each character's shape as it passes through a magnetic field. The E-13B and CMC-7 fonts are international standards.
Key applications:
Bank checks and drafts
Financial documents
Secure payment vouchers
Automated invoice processing
Ticketing and coupons
Advantages:
High-speed automated reading
Resistant to smudging and tampering
Compatible with offset, screen, and flexo printing
Can be combined with visible inks
Secure data encoding
